It’s all about you

Hi kids

Discover Dachsteinkönig mountain

There is a lot to say and discover about Dachsteinkönig mountain. Satisfy your curiosity and immerse yourself in a fabulous world.

  • What happens at a ground-breaking ceremony?

The first thing to do when you build a house is to build its foundation so it stands securely. In the past, people did not do that with a mechanical digger, but with a spade and pickaxe. That is what the ground-breaking ceremony symbolises: the beginning of something new being built.

  • The legend of the Dachsteinkönig

Where today the glaciers of the Dachstein massif shimmer in the sunlight, there once were sprawling alpine pastures. These pastures provided exceptionally tasty and nourishing grasses and herbs for the alpine cattle that grazed there.

Where today the glaciers of the Dachstein massif shimmer in the sunlight, there once were sprawling alpine pastures. These pastures provided exceptionally tasty and nourishing grasses and herbs for the alpine cattle that grazed there. So it was no surprise that the dairymaids who tended to the cattle in the alpine cabins had milk, butter, and cheese in abundance. Because of this bounty, they became lavish and began wasting their riches.

They plastered the path from the large cabin to the well with old cheese loafs. They caulked the spaces between the beams of their wooden walls with flitches of bacon; and they greased their shoes with delicious butter. They even bathed in vats of milk! Yes, this is what the reckless young dairymaids were up to on the alps of the Dachstein! Their sinful squandering turned into petty meanness should a tired wanderer or poor beggar approach. Swearing, they chased anyone away who was looking for a rest or refreshment on the alp. And should he not leave promptly enough, they sent their two biting dogs after him! One day, a hungry man came to the dairymaids’ alp. The old, ice-grey man was obviously tired from the long and steep ascent to the alp. He staggered towards the bench and requested some milk and a piece of bread. But the merciless maids had no compassion! They yelled at him and warned him out of the cabin with harsh words. But lo and behold: the dairymaids watched in horror as the old man suddenly grew to gigantic heights and thundered:

"You’ve refused rest to the King of Dachstein -
may all your future goods and chattels be destroyed!
May snow cover you, your alp and your herds
and may it never be snow-free up here again!"

As the King of Dachstein’s enormous figure disappeared, dark clouds immediately covered the skies and it began to snow heavily – it snowed like you wouldn’t believe! The cold that followed the snow caused the thick layer of snow to freeze. That was that – all life was buried under everlasting ice. Only one of the dairymaids, who had managed to escape the snowstorm and run from the alp to the valley, lived to tell the people of Gosau the story of the King of Dachstein’s terrible vengeance.

Still today, on especially hot summer days, a milky white stream flows from the field of ice over boulders and rock into the lakes of Gosau. Then the people of Gosau say "There they go, the cursed dairymaids, bathing in this heat!" Will they always have to stay in the underground chambers, you ask? Well, locals believe that the maids can be freed from the King of Dachstein’s curse! A young boy who has never lied must climb the glacier with a black bull, a black dog and a black cock. If, once they have reached the top, the bull bellows three times, the dog barks three times, and the cock crows three times, then the dairymaids will be freed. But will this ever become reality?

  • Exciting holidays in Gosau

Surely you know of Mozart, the composer? He lived in Salzburg, which is not far from Gosau at all. Our cosy village is surrounded by vast mountains, deep lakes and sunny alps – just the setting for courageous discoverers!
